The house is otherwise empty except for an old woman housekeeper. The Luxury Inside Inside, the rooms are furnished with luxury and good taste: silver plate, elegant napery, and a good picture. It is a private lair for Hyde's pleasures. The Disreputable Life Hyde's past is full of cruelty and vile associates. He is hated by everyone who meets him. The old woman shows no loyalty, and the police easily find her willing to betray him.

The Fugitive's Existence A Life of Fear After the murder, Hyde is a hunted man. He has no friends, no family. He is on the run, but he cannot escape his own nature. He is forced to return to the cabinet to get the drugs. The Final Hours In the cabinet, he paces up and down, weeping and sending out desperate orders. He is a creature of pure fear and hatred, unable to live as himself or as Jekyll. The End of Hyde He finally commits suicide by poison, escaping the gallows but also destroying his alter ego.
